A DETAILED GUIDE ON HIDING THINGS IN A RESIDENCE OR ON A PERSON FROM SMALL VALUABLES TO PEOPLE IS PRESENTED WITH EMPHASIS ON FOILING BURGLARS WITH ENHANCED SENSITIVITY TO HIDING PLACES.
Abstract
SOME BURGLARS HAVE WELL-DEVELOPED INTUITIONS AND ARE VERY SENSITIVE TO SPATIAL PECULIARITIES. ON A HUNCH, THEY WILL FREQUENTLY GO DIRECTLY TO A PERSON'S MOST SECRET HIDING PLACE. THREE BASIC TYPES OF BURGLARS ARE THE GRABBER, THE PROFESSIONAL, AND THE SELECTOR. THE GRABBER MAY DO NO MORE THAN RUN IN THE DOOR AND GRAB ANYTHING IN SIGHT, POSSIBLY JUST FOR THE THRILL OF STEALING. THE PROFESSIONAL WILL CHOOSE ONE TYPE OF VICTIM AND STUDY THE SITUATION CAREFULLY, ASCERTAINING THE VICTIM'S DAILY SCHEDULE AND FINDING OUT WHETHER ALARM SYSTEMS ARE USED. THE SELECTOR IS EVEN BETTER TRAINED THAN THE PROFESSIONAL. THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT THIS TYPE OF BURGLAR HAS BEEN DIRECTED TO A SPECIFIC HOUSE BY SOMEONE WHO WANTS A CERTAIN VALUABLE AND MAY KNOW WHERE IT IS KEPT. OF ALL STEPS FOLLOWED BY A BURGLAR, ONLY FOUR CONCERN THE OCCUPANT DIRECTLY: CHOOSING THE VICTIM; GAINING ENTRY; LOCATING VALUABLES; AND EFFECTING AN ESCAPE. PROCEDURES TO FOLLOW IN FINDING A HIDING PLACE FOR VALUABLES ARE DETAILED, AND CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO THE ART OF HIDING PEOPLE, THE CONSTRUCTION AND USE OF WALLS, MOVABLE PROPERTY THAT MUST BE HIDDEN, POSSIBILITIES FOR HIDING PLACES ON THE BODY, AND THE MOVEMENT OF VALUABLES IN VEHICLES. SOURCES OF HIDING PLACES ARE NOTED IN AN APPENDIX. FIGURES AND ILLUSTRATIONS, A GLOSSARY, A BIBLIOGRAPHY, AND AN INDEX ARE INCLUDED. (DEP)
