THE CHICAGO, IL., POLICE DEPARTMENT'S ANNUAL STATISTICAL SUMMARY FOR 1978 LIST ACHIEVEMENTS AND STATISTICAL DATA AND IS DESIGNED FOR REFERENCE BY GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES AT THE CITY, COUNTY, STATE, AND NATIONAL LEVELS.
Abstract
IT BEGINS WITH A COMMENT FROM THE POLICE SUPERINTENDENT STATING THAT MAJOR CRIMES IN CHICAGO WERE REDUCED 6.6 PERCENT IN 1978 AND THAT CHICAGO RANKED 50TH LOWEST IN PER CAPITA CRIME AMONG THE NATION'S 57 LARGEST CITIES AND FIFTH LOWEST IN PER CAPITA CRIME AMONG THE 6 LARGEST CITIES (THOSE EXCEEDING ONE MILLION IN POPULATION). HOMICIDES ALSO DECLINED. THE BEAT REPRESENTATIVE PROGRAM, CREATED FOR CITIZENS TO BECOME INVOLVED IN CRIME PREVENTION EFFORTS IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS WAS EXPANDED TO 15 CENTERS FROM 10 CENTERS IN 1978. COMMUNITY EFFORTS BY THE POLICE INCLUDED PRESENTATIONS ON CRIME PREVENTION BEFORE SCHOOLS, CHURCHS, AND OTHER GROUPS; POLICE-COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS AND FORUMS; AND FIELD TRIPS FOR 66,375 YOUNG PEOPLE. DATA IS PRESENTED ON ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE FIELDS OF TRAFFIC SAFETY, BOMB AND ARSON UNITS, FOOT PATROL, BUILDING PROGRAMS, AND PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION PROGRAMS. THE BULK OF THE REPORT IS DEVOTED TO STATISTICS. THESE INCLUDE TABULAR DATA ON INDEX CRIMES BY TYPE, AND ARRESTS AND CITATIONS MURDER OFFENSES BY TYPE INDEX CRIMES BY DISTRICT AND AREA; ROBBERY, ASSAULT, AND AUTO THEFT DATA. (MJW)
