THE METHODOLOGY OF A SUCCESSFUL POLICE BUILDING PROJECT, ONE PART OF A CONTINUOUS PROGRAM TO UPGRADE THE PHYSICAL PLANT OF THE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY IN CINCINNATI, OHIO, IS DESCRIBED.
Abstract
THE FIRST ITEM OF BUSINESS IN THE PROJECT WAS THE SELECTION OF AN ARCHITECTURAL FIRM. INVITATIONS WERE SENT OUT, AND FOUR FIRMS WERE EVENTUALLY INTERVIEWED. IN 1972, THE ARCHITECTURAL FIRM WAS SELECTED, AND SITES SUITABLE FOR THE NEW POLICE BUILDING WERE REVIEWED, WITH ONE CHOSEN THAT FITTED REQUIREMENTS OF SPACE AND LOCATION. SINCE THE PROJECT NEEDED A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF LAND STRATEGICALLY LOCATED NEAR THE WORKING CENTER OF TWO POLICE DISTRICTS, PLANS WERE FORMULATED TO INVOLVE POLICE PERSONNEL IN THE PROJECT, AND AVAILABLE LITERATURE WAS EXAMINED WITH REGARD TO INNOVATIONS IN POLICE BUILDING DESIGN. ARRANGEMENTS WERE MADE THROUGH THE POLICE DEPARTMENT'S COMMUNITY RELATIONS BUREAU TO ENCOURAGE COMMUNITY KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROJECT AND TO ELICIT SUPPORT. AFTER CONSIDERING VARIOUS ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN FEATURES, BIDS WERE SOLICITED, AND A CONTRACT WAS AWARDED IN 1974. POLICE PERSONNEL, ARCHITECTS, AND CONTRACTORS WORKED CLOSELY IN THE COURSE OF THE PROJECT. PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE COMPLETED POLICE BUILDING ARE INCLUDED. (DEP)
