PARENTS' HELPLINE COUNSELING GROUPS FROM THROUGHOUT GREAT BRITAIN ARE LISTED BY CITY OR AREA. THE LISTING INCLUDES GROUP NAME, CONTACT PERSON, AND A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE GROUP AND ITS ACTIVITIES AND SERVICES. GROUPS RANGE IN SIZE FROM 15 TO 36 VOLUNTEERS. MANY OFFER A 24-HOUR HOTLINE (PHONE NUMBERS ARE INCLUDED), SELF-HELP GROUPS, AND COUNSELING SERVICES. SOME ARE PART OF FAMILY COUNSELING SERVICES. ALSO INCLUDED IS ADVICE ON HOW TO START A GROUP SIMILAR TO FAMILY CONTACT LINE HOTLINE. IDEAS ON ORGANIZATION, STAFF TRAINING, PUBLICITY, AND FUNDRAISING ARE FURNISHED. ALSO, INCLUDED ARE LISTS OF SOCIAL SERVICE DEPARTMENTS THROUGHOUT GREAT BRITAIN WILLING TO ADVISE PARENT HELPLINE GROUPS, THE PERSONAL REPORT OF AN ABUSING MOTHER WHO RECEIVED HELP, AND SPECIAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PREVENTING CHILD ABUSE AND HELPING HELPLINE GROUPS SUCCEED. A RECENT MAGAZINE ARTICLE BY A FORMERLY ABUSING MOTHER INVOLVED IN PARENT HELPLINE WORK DEPLORES THE DISINTERESTED ATTITUDES OF MANY DOCTORS AND SOCIAL WORKERS TOWARD ABUSING PARENTS WHO SEEK HELP, AND RECOMMENDS WAYS THAT BRITISH SOCIETY CAN HELP PREVENT CHILD ABUSE.
