AFTER DESCRIBING COURT TEAM CASE MANAGEMENT AND ITS ADVANTAGES, THE ARTICLE CONSIDERS THE TEAM APPROACH IN TWO COURT CLERK'S OFFICES (AN INTERMEDIATE APPELLATE COURT AND A TRIAL COURT OF GENERAL JURISDICTION).
Abstract
THE TEAM CASE MANAGEMENT APPROACH USED BY THE FEDERAL SECOND CIRCUIT COURT CALLS FOR INTEGRATED CASE PROCESSING BY FOUR TEAMS, EACH COMPOSED OF TWO CASE-MANAGEMENT CLERKS, DESIGNATED 'CAPTAINS,' WHO WORK AS TEAM MEMBERS IN ADDITION TO SUPERVISING. EACH SET OF TWO TEAMS IS AIDED BY A CASE-MANAGEMENT TRAINEE AND A CASE-CONTROL SUPERVISOR. THE CASE-CONTROL SUPERVISOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE WORK OF ALL FOUR TEAMS. CASES ARE ASSIGNED TO TEAMS ACCORDING TO TYPE OF LITIGATION, WITH EACH CASE-MANAGEMENT TEAM HANDLING ALL ASPECTS OF ITS CASES. WITHIN EACH TEAM, TASKS ARE ALLOCATED ACCORDING TO PERSONAL PREFERENCE. TEAM MEMBERS MUST BE FAMILIAR WITH ALL CASE MANAGEMENT OPERATIONS, HOWEVER, SO AS TO ASSUME THE WORK OF AN ABSENTEE AND HELP IN AN OVERBURDENED AREA. WITH THE CASE MANAGERS' THOROUGH UNDERSTANDING OF CASE MANAGEMENT, PROBLEMS ARE RESOLVED MORE QUICKLY. WORKER ATTITUDES AND MOTIVATION HAVE IMPROVED, EVIDENCED BY LOWER ABSENTEEISM, GREATER WILLINGNESS TO HELP OTHERS, AND GREATER PRODUCTIVITY. CHARTS OF THE TEAM CASE MANAGEMENT APPROACH IN A HYPOTHETICAL INTERMEDIATE COURT AND A TRIAL COURT OF GENERAL JURISDICTION ARE PROVIDED, ACCOMPANIED BY COMMENTARY. (RCB)
