APPROVED BY THE AMERICAN CORRECTIONAL ASSOCIATION AND OTHER RELEVANT GROUPS, THE LIBRARY STANDARDS FOR JAILS AND DETENTION FACILITIES ARE INTENDED TO MEET ALL INFORMATION AND LEISURE READING NEEDS OF INMATES.
Abstract
STANDARDS REFER TO THE ORGANIZATION OF LIBRARIES IN JAILS AND DETENTION FACILITIES, LIBRARY PHILOSOPHY, MATERIALS, LIBRARY SERVICES, LIBRARY FACILITIES, BUDGET, AND STAFF. LIBRARY SERVICES SHOULD BE AVAILABLE TO THE JAIL THROUGH COMPLETE AND INTEGRATED MULTIMEDIA INFORMATION SERVICES FOR BOTH RESIDENTS AND STAFF. LIBRARY MATERIALS SHOULD INCLUDE CURRENT INFORMATIONAL, RECREATIONAL, LEGAL, AND EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES APPROPRIATE TO RESIDENTS, BOTH IN THE LIBRARY AND IN THE LIVING UNITS. QUANTITIES OF LIBRARY MATERIALS THAT SHOULD BE PROVIDED BASED ON RESIDENT POPULATION ARE OUTLINED. THE DUTIES AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS OF LIBRARIANS ARE ALSO DELINEATED. FINALLY, PROGRAMS FOR INDIVIDUAL OR GROUP INFORMATION OR ENJOYMENT SHOULD BE DEVELOPED IN SUCH AREAS AS BASIC EDUCATION CLASSES, BOOK AND MEDIA DISCUSSION GROUPS, MUSIC, FILM PROGRAMS, CREATIVE WRITING, AND A SPEAKERS FORUM. FOR LIBRARY STANDARDS IN ADULT CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS, SEE NCJ 64930.
