PROCEEDINGS OF THE MAY 1978 SYMPOSIUM, 'THE ROLE OF BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE IN PHYSICAL SECURITY,' ILLUSTRATE THE EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION THAT TOOK PLACE BETWEEN SPECIALISTS IN PHYSICAL SECURITY AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE.
Abstract
PHYSIOLOGICAL MONITORING TECHNOLOGY IS INTRODUCED AS A RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT APPROACH TO ASSESSING DEFENDER (E.G., SECURITY GUARD) PERFORMANCE CAPABILITY AND DETECTING PHYSIOLOGICAL EXPOSURE TO TOXIC CHEMICALS; BIOSENSOR COMPONENTS ARE DESCRIBED AND TWO BIOSENSOR CONFIGURATIONS ARE PRESENTED. THE USE OF BIOSENSORS AS DETECTORS OF EXPLOSIVES IS THEN REPORTED IN A STUDY OF THE NEUROPHYSIOLOGICAL OPERANT AND CLASSICAL CONDITIONING METHODS IN RATS IN THE DETECTION OF EXPLOSIVES. NEXT, RECENTLY DEVELOPED COMPUTER-BASED LINK ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES ARE REPORTED, WITH ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE POTENTIAL APPLICATION OF THESE TECHNIQUES TO THREAT ANALYSIS AND SAFEGUARDS EVALUATION. AN OVERVIEW OF THE MACHINE ANALYSIS OF THE INTERNAL THREAT (MAIT) SYSTEM EXPLAINS HOW THE PROBLEM OF THE INTERNAL THREAT OPTIMIZED BY THE TACTICS OF COLLUSION AND ILLICIT USE OF ACCESS HAS BEEN STRUCTURED INTO A DATA PROCESSING FORMAT. DISCUSSION OF RESEARCH DIRECTIONS FOR COUNTER-NUCLEAR TERRORISM STRATEGIES POINTS TO INCREASING THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE NUCLEAR TERRORISM THREAT AND TO IDENTIFYING DIFFERENTIATED STRATEGIES OF PREVENTION AND RESPONSE THAT ARE ORGANIZED INTO A SET OF THEORETICALLY INFORMED, YET SPECIFIC, POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS. APPENDIXES TO THIS DISCUSSION CONSIDER FACTORS THAT SUGGEST THE NEED FOR SUCH RESEARCH, TERRORIST GROUP TYPES, AND THE THREAT TO CIVIL LIBERTIES POSED BY COUNTER-NUCLEAR TERRORISM MEASURES. POTENTIAL APPLICATION OF COMPUTER-BASED CRISIS MANAGEMENT AIDS TO PROBLEMS OF PHYSICAL SECURITY ARE REVIEWED, AS ARE FINDINGS OF BRAIN WAVE AND BIOCHEMICAL RESEARCH. THE EFFECTS OF PSYCHOLOGICAL DETERRENCE IN ROBBERIES OF BANKS IS STUDIED AND APPLIED TO OTHER INSTITUTIONS. FINALLY, PANEL DISCUSSIONS AND REPORTS FROM FOUR WORKSHOPS ARE SYNTHESIZED; THE WORKSHOPS DEALT WITH HUMAN SENSORY CAPABILITIES AND LIMITATIONS; HUMAN ENGINEERING OF THE WORKPLACE; HUMAN MOTIVATION, ATTITUDES, ERROR, AND RELIABILITY; AND PERSONNEL SELECTION, PLACEMENT, AND TRAINING. EACH TOPIC AREA IS FULLY ILLUSTRATED AND A LIST OF ATTENDEES IS INCLUDED. (MHP)
