THESE ENGINEERING INSTRUCTION (EI) ARE INTENDED TO PROVIDE GUIDANCE FOR PREPARING FEASIBILITY STUDIES FOR TOTAL ENERGY (TE), SELECTIVE ENERGY (SE), AND HEAT PUMP (HP) SYSTEMS.
Abstract
A TE SYSTEM IS AN ONSITE ELECTRICAL POWER GENERATING SYSTEM ARRANGED FOR MAXIMUM USE OF INPUT FUEL ENERGY; IT USES THE WASTE HEAT FOR SPACE HEATING, SPACE COOLING, AND DOMESTIC WATER HEATING. GENERALLY, A TE SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY INDEPENDENT OF COMMERCIAL POWER. AN SE SYSTEM HAS PART OF ITS ELECTRICAL POWER (40 TO 70 PERCENT) GENERATED ONSITE BY A GENERATING SYSTEM ARRANGED FOR THE SAME KIND OF MAXIMUM USE OF INPUT FUEL ENERGY AS TE. THE BALANCE OF ELECTRICAL POWER IS OBTAINED FROM COMMERCIAL SOURCES. AN HP SYSTEM IS A MODIFIED AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM IN WHICH REFRIGERATION EQUIPMENT IS ARRANGED IN SUCH A MANNER THAT IT CAN BE USED EITHER TO COOL OR HEAT OR DO BOTH SIMULTANEOUSLY. THE REFRIGERATION COMPRESSOR MAY BE DRIVEN BY AN ELECTRIC PUMP OR BY A PRIME MOVER. DESCRIPTIONS OF THE TYPICAL ENERGY SYSTEMS ARE PROVIDED IN THESE REPORTS, SOME OF WHICH COVER ENGINE GENERATORS, TURBINE GENERATORS, AND COMBINATION SYSTEMS. ARCHITECTURAL, GEOGRAPHICAL, AND DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS ARE DESCRIBED, AS ARE COMPUTERIZED TECHNIQUES FOR ENERGY SYSTEMS EVALUATION, ALTERNATIVE PRIMARY ENERGY SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT, AND EQUIPMENT SELECTION, AND ENERGY COSTS AND SERVICE CONTRACT COSTS ESTIMATION. DEVELOPMENT OF LIFE CYCLE COST ANALYSIS AND COMPARISON OF AN ALTERNATIVE SYSTEM ARE DEALT WITH, ALSO. APPENDIXES INCLUDE NUMEROUS TABLES, A GLOSSARY OF TERMS, AND ASSORTED INSTRUCTIONS. (PRG)
