Abstract
FOR ATTORNEYS, JUDGES, LAW STUDENTS, AND OTHERS WORKING IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE FIELD, CITATIONS INCLUDE LAW REVIEW ARTICLES, NEWSPAPER AND MAGAZINE REPORTS, AND RELATED VOLUMES. EACH ENTRY INCUDES THE AUTHOR'S NAME, WHEN GIVEN; TITLE OF THE PUBLICATION; PUBLICATION SOURCE; DATE OF PUBLICATION, AND PAGINATION. AS INDICATED BY THE ENTRY TITLES, THE IMPOSITION OF THE DEATH PENALTY REMAINS A CONTROVERSIAL QUESTION. ALTHOUGH ONLY ONE EXECUTION HAS TAKEN PLACE SINCE 1967, MANY COURTS AND JURIES CONTINUE TO IMPOSE THE DEATH PENALTY. MANY OF THESE DECISIONS HAVE BEEN UPHELD BY THE U.S. SUPREME COURT EVEN IF THE SENTENCE IS NOT CARRIED OUT. PUBLIC OPINION IS AS AMBIVALENT AS THE COURTS IN ITS ATTITUDE TOWARD THE DEATH PENALTY. THE SUBJECT WILL CONTINUE TO BE DEBATED EXTENSIVELY UNTIL A FINAL LEGAL DECISION IS MADE. (LWM)
