LENGTH OF IMNATE CONFINEMENT IN THE PRETRIAL UNIT OF THE CHICAGO METROPOLITAN CORRECTIONAL CENTER, BASED ON INMATE STATUS, IS DISCUSSED.
Abstract
STATISTICAL INFORMATION WAS COMPILED FROM A 10-PERCENT SAMPLE OF ALL RELEASES THROUGH DECEMBER 15, 1977. IN ADDITION, INTERVIEWS WERE CONDUCTED WITH 114 INMATES FOR THE PURPOSE OF ASCERTAINING INMATE IMPRESSIONS OF THE UNIT. THE DATA SHOW THAT THE AVERAGE STAY IN THE PRETRIAL UNIT IS 28.6 DAYS. OF THOSE CONFINED TO THE UNIT, 23 PERCENT WERE RELEASED WITHIN 3 DAYS, 39 PERCENT WITHIN 7 DAYS, AND 77 PERCENT WITHIN 30 DAYS. ALMOST 3 PERCENT REMAINED LONGER THAN 180 DAYS. STATUS AT ADMISSION AND CASE DISPOSITION ARE RELATED TO LENGTH OF STAY. THE SHORTEST STAY WAS AMONG PERSONS RELEASED ON BOND, 10.6 DAYS, WHILE THE LONGEST STAY WAS AMONG CONVICTED TRANSFERS, 117.1 DAYS. MOST OF THE OTHER OFFENDERS WERE CONFINED FOR AN AVERAGE OF 40 DAYS. AMONG THOSE PROCESSED THROUGH THE UNIT, 29.1 PERCENT WERE RELEASED TO THE COMMUNITY, 35.2 PERCENT WERE 'MARSHAL'S HOLDOVERS,' AND 35.7 PERCENT WERE PERSONS WHO WERE CONTINUED IN CONFINEMENT. THOSE WHO WERE RELEASED TO THE COMMUNITY GENERALLY LEFT AFTER SHORT STAYS OF CONFINEMENT, WHILE THOSE WHO WERE CONTINUED IN CONFINEMENT USUALLY STAYED A LONG PERIOD OF TIME IN THE PRETRIAL UNIT. OVERALL, INMATES VIEWED THE UNIT FAVORABLY. THE MAIN AREAS OF COMPLAINTS WERE THE USE OF MICROWAVE OVENS AND THE LACK OF ADEQUATE RECREATION. TABLES ARE INCLUDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
