Abstract
AFTER SUMMARIZING THE HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE, THE OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL, AND THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION (FBI), THE ATTORNEY GENERAL DESCRIBED THE MANIFOLD ACTIVITIES OF THE FBI, WHICH HAVE MADE IT THE WORLDWIDE PACESETTER OF LAW ENFORCEMENT, AS EVIDENCED BY THE LARGE NUMBERS OF FOREIGN LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENTS TRAINING EVERY YEAR AT THE FBI ACADEMY IN QUANTICO, VA. AMONG THE MOST REMARKABLE, AND PERHAPS LEAST KNOWN ACTIVITIES OF THE FBI, WHICH REQUIRE A UNIQUE ARRAY OF SKILLS AND SOPHISTICATED DETECTION TECHNIQUES, THE ATTORNEY GENERAL DESCRIBED THE FBI CRIMINALISTICS LABORATORY; ANTITERRORIST SECURITY MEASURES (E.G., AT THE 1980 LAKE PLACID OLYMPICS); WHITE-COLLAR CRIME INVESTIGATIONS (WHICH NETTED 3,268 CONVICTIONS IN 1979); COMPUTER FRAUD DETECTION WORK; UNDERCOVER ACTIVITIES IN CONNECTION WITH THE ONGOING FIGHT AGAINST ORGANIZED CRIME AND THE CORRUPTION OF PUBLIC OFFICIALS; AND COUNTERINTELLIGENCE OPERATIONS.
