SELECTED CHARACTERISTICS OF FEMALE OFFENDERS OF THE MINNESOTA CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION FOR WOMEN AND THE MINNESOTA HOME SCHOOL AS OF DECEMBER 1978 ARE PRESENTED IN TABULAR FORM.
Abstract
CHARACTERISTICS ARE GROUPED INTO CATEGORIES INCLUDING DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES, CURRENT OFFENSE INFORMATION, PRIOR CORRECTIONAL HISTORY, PERSONAL AND SOCIAL PROBLEM AREAS, INSTITUTIONAL ADJUSTMENT, INMATE PROBLEMS AND BEHAVIOR, MULTIPLE PROBLEM OFFENDERS AND INSTITUTIONAL BEHAVIOR, AND MISCELLANEOUS CHARACTERISTICS BY INSTITUTION. ALSO PROVIDED ARE DATA RELATING CHARACTERISTICS OF WOMEN OFFENDERS INCARCERATED FROM 1971 THROUGH 1977, FEMALE/MALE ARRESTS AND COMMITMENTS, AND UPDATE INFORMATION. A TOTAL OF 78 ADULT FEMALE OFFENDERS WERE ON THE INSTITUTIONAL ROLLS AS OF DECEMBER 1978; 77 OF THESE WERE INCARCERATED ON GROUNDS, AND 10 WERE ON ESCAPE STATUS AT THE TIME OF THE SURVEY. OVER 33 PERCENT WERE 20 TO 24 YEARS OF AGE AT THE TIME OF COMMITMENT. APPROXIMATELY 67 PERCENT WERE WHITE, OVER 50 PERCENT WERE SINGLE, AND 49 PERCENT OF THE WOMEN HAD NO CHILDREN. HOMICIDE AND OTHER OFFENSES AGAINST PERSONS ACCOUNTED FOR 59 PERCENT OF THE COMMITMENTS AT THE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION. PROPERTY OFFENSES ACCOUNTED FOR OVER 80 PERCENT OF THE INCARCERATIONS AT THE HOME. THE INCREASE IN TIME SERVED BY FEMALE PROPERTY OFFENDERS IN 1977 DID NOT REAPPEAR IN 1978. DATA REGARDING TIME SERVED BY FEMALE PERSON OFFENDERS WERE INCONCLUSIVE AS OF 1977. A DISCUSSION OF INMATE PROBLEMS AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO INSTITUTIONAL BEHAVIOR IS APPENDED.
