THE RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF A STUDY OF THE FACTORIAL RELATIONSHIP OF WHOLISTIC LUESCHER COLOR TEST (LCT) PREFERENCE BEHAVIOR TO NORMAL AND ABNORMAL PERSONALITY FUNCTIONING IN INCARCERATED CRIMINALS.
Abstract
THE MILLON-ILLINOIS SELF REPORT INVENTORY (MI-SRI), THE MINNESOTA MULTIPHASIC PERSONALITY INVENTORY (MMPI), AND THE WHOLISTIC PERSONALITY MEASURE OF THE LCT (A DESCRIPTOR OF TOTAL LCT PREFERENCE BEHAVIOR AND DESIGNATED AS D2) WERE ADMINISTERED CONCURRENTLY TO 376 INCARCERATED CRIMINALS. THEY WERE THEN CONDUCTED SEQUENTIALLY OVER A 2-YEAR PERIOD AS PART OF A BATTERY OF TESTS GIVEN BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER A CLINICAL INTERVIEW TO ASSESS EACH CRIMINAL'S PROGNOSIS FOR PAROLE RELEASE. TEST SCORES ON 22 PERSONALITY VARIABLES CONSISTING OF THE LCT'S D2, EACH OF THE EIGHT MI-SRI SCALES, AND EACH OF THE MMPI SCALES WERE INTERCORRELATED. RESULTS SHOWED, THAT, OF THE FIVE FACTORS OBTAINED, THE LCT'S D2 WAS FOUND TO LOAD POSITIVELY ON AN EMOTIONAL CONTROL FACTOR. IT WAS NOT FOUND TO LOAD ON A PARANOID, CYCLOID, SCHIZOID, OR COGNITIVE CONTROL FACTOR. THE RESULTS OF THIS FACTOR ANALYTIC STUDY OF THE LCT'S D2, MI-SRI, AND MMPI TEND TO SUPPORT THE NOTION THAT THE LCT'S D2 CAN BE VIEWED AS A MEASURE OF THE AMOUNT OF AFFECTIVE CONTROL OVER WHICH AN INDIVIDUAL IMPOSES ON HIS BEHAVIOR. RESEARCH RESULTS SUGGEST THAT INCARCERATED CRIMINALS EMPLOY CONFORMING INTERPERSONAL COPING STRATEGIES TO ADJUST TO AN ENVIRONMENT AND THEREFORE TEND TO ACT IN A COGNITIVELY CONSTRICTED AND AFFECTIVELY RESTRAINED WAY TOWARD OTHERS. AS A CONSEQUENCE OF PSYCHOLOGICAL NEED FRUSTRATION EFFECTS, THEY WILL TEND TO SHOW COLOR PREFERENCES ON THE LCT FOR THE AUXILIARY COLORS (GREY, BLACK, BROWN, AND VIOLET) BUT COLOR REJECTIONS ON THE LCT FOR THE PRIMARY COLORS (YELLOW, RED, GREEN, AND BLUE). THUS, LUESCHER COLOR PREFERENCE BEHAVIOR GENERALLY MAY BE MORE DIRECTLY RELATED TO NORMAL, SITUATIONAL THAN TO ABNORMAL, PERSONALISTIC VARIABLES. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT MORE RESEARCH BE DONE TO DEMONSTRATE A STRONGER RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE LCT'S D2 AND THE PERSONALITY DIMENSION, AFFECTIVE CONTROL. TABLES, FOOTNOTES, AND REFERENCES ARE PROVIDED.
