Abstract
A COMPUTER AIDED POLICE RECORDS INDEX SYSTEM WITH AN INTERFACE TO THE ARIZONA CRIMINAL JUSTICE INFORMATION SYSTEM WAS COMPLETED. USERS HAVE ACCESS TO VARIOUS COUNTY, STATE, AND NATIONAL LEVEL CRIMINAL JUSTICE INFORMATION SYSTEMS. IN ADDITION, TWO DISTRICTS RECEIVED MOBILE DIGITAL TERMINAL SYSTEMS ENABLING OFFICERS IN PATROL CARS TO DIRECTLY ACCESS THE COMPUTER FILES. THE DEPARTMENT HAS BEEN DECENTRALIZED: TRAFFIC DETAILS AND DETECTIVES HAVE BEEN ASSIGNED TO EACH DISTRICT. A NEIGHBORHOOD TEAM POLICING EXPERIMENT WAS INITIATED IN ONE DISTRICT TO DETERMINE IF THIS COULD PROVIDE A MORE EFFECTIVE USE OF POLICE RESOURCES. ALTHOUGH THE CRIME INDEX FOR THE CITY INCREASED 5 PERCENT, THE NUMBER OF CRIMES PER 100,000 POPULATION REMAINED CONSTANT. DESCRIPTIONS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE INDIVIDUAL DIVISIONS ARE PROVIDED ALONG WITH DETAILED BUDGET AND CRIME STATISTICS.
