THIS SELF-INSTRUCTIONAL MANUAL PRESENTS AN OVERVIEW OF THE IPDE SYSTEM DEVELOPED BY MARYLAND'S STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO HELP AVERAGE DRIVERS IDENTIFY, PREDICT, DECIDE, AND EXECUTE DRIVING SAFETY MANEUVERS.
Abstract
THE IDENTIFICATION AND PREDICTION SECTIONS HELP DRIVERS DEVELOP TECHNIQUES TO ANTICIPATE AND AVOID TROUBLE. THESE SECTIONS INCLUDE METHODS FOR SCANNING THE ROAD, LISTS OF POTENTIAL HAZARDS, AND LISTS OF POSSIBLE MANUEVERS TO AVOID HAZARDS. THE DECISION AND EXECUTION SECTIONS COVER DRIVING TECHNIQUES THAT HELP THE MOTORIST TO AVOID HAZARDOUS SITUATIONS. ALSO DISCUSSED ARE THE COLLISION POTENTIAL OF HAZARDS AND FACTORS WHICH HINDER SAFE DRIVING (I.E., LIMITED SPACE OR VISION). AN ANSWER KEY FOR THE QUESTIONS IS INCLUDED AT THE END OF EACH SECTION. ILLUSTRATIONS ARE PROVIDED. FOR RELATED DOCUMENTS, SEE NCJ 67969-70 AND 67972.
