PAPERS PRESENTED AT A 3-DAY MEETING ON ALCOHOLISM COVER SOCIOCULTURAL AND SOCIAL-PSYCHOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES OF ALCOHOL ABUSE, THE INCIDENCE AND PREVENTION OF ALCOHOL-RELATED PROBLEMS, AND PROGRAM IMPLICATIONS.
Abstract
THIS MONOGRAPH CONTAINS NOT ONLY SIX PAPERS, BUT ALSO PORTIONS OF THE DISCUSSION FOLLOWING EACH PRESENTATION. THE PAPERS GENERALLY POINT OUT WEAKNESSES IN CURRENT ALCOHOLISM RESEARCH, UNDERSCORE THE COMPLEX NATURE OF THE PROBLEM, AND POINT OUT AREAS IN WHICH FURTHER RESEARCH IS NEEDED. A PAPER ON THE DISTRIBUTION OF ALCOHOL AS RELATED TO CONSUMPTION FINDS THAT GREATER NUMBERS OF OUTLETS AND LONGER HOURS OF SALE ARE CORRELATED WITH GREATER CONSUMPTION. THE POLITICAL IMPLICATIONS OF RESTRICTED SALES ARE DISCUSSED. THE EFFECTS OF THE MEDIA AND OTHER SOCIAL PRESSURES ON DRINKING PATTERNS, PARTICULARLY THE DRINKING PATTERNS OF ADOLESCENTS, ARE DISCUSSED. FINALLY, THE GAMES AN ALCOHOLIC MAY PLAY WITH THE THERAPIST ARE DESCRIBED AND TECHNIQUES ARE GIVEN FOR BREAKING THE GAME-PLAYING PATTERN. EACH PAPER CONTAINS A BIBLIOGRAPHY; AN APPENDIX PRESENTS AN EXTENSIVE LISTING OF STUDIES FROM EASTERN EUROPE, WESTERN EUROPE, AND NORTH AMERICA. FOOTNOTES, FIGURES, AND AN INDEX ARE INCLUDED.
