THE SAMPLING PROCEDURES FOR THE 1977 NATIONAL SURVEY OF YOUTH ARE DESCRIBED GENERALLY IN TERMS OF THE MULTISTAGE SAMPLING PROCESS AND TECHNICALLY IN TERMS OF THE SAMPLING METHODOLOGY.
Abstract
AN OVERVIEW INTRODUCES THE SAMPLING PROCESS, WITH DEFINITIONS OF THE PRIMARY SAMPLING UNITS (PSU'S) AND SECONDARY SAMPLING UNITS (SSU'S), TOGETHER WITH SEGMENTS (PORTIONS OF SSU'S), AND HOUSEHOLDS WITHIN SEGMENTS. FOR SSU'S AND PSU'S, THE SAMPLING PROCEDURES USED, STRATIFICATION, DATA SOURCES, SAMPLE FRAME, AND SAMPLE SELECTION ARE DESCRIBED. SELECTION AND SAMPLING OF SEGMENTS AND HOUSEHOLDS ARE ALSO OUTLINED. ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO COMPLETION RATES AND CHECKS ON THE REPRESENTATIVENESS OF THE SAMPLE. THE TECHNICAL NOTES CONCENTRATE ON THE DETERMINATION OF SAMPLE RATES WITHIN SEGMENTS, ESTIMATORS FOR PROPORTION AND FREQUENCY ESTIMATES, AND VARIANCES FOR THESE ESTIMATES. THE TECHNICAL NOTES ALSO DEAL WITH CONFIDENCE LIMITS AND THE ADEQUACY OF RATIO ESTIMATES AND DESIGN EFFECTS. AN APPENDIX ELABORATES ON SPECIAL TECHNIQUES RELATED TO SECOND STAGE SAMPLING. EXTENSIVE TABLES, FIGURES, AND EQUATIONS HELP TO CLARIFY THE TEXT.
