In the first half of 1979, 284,214 offenses were brought to the attention of the police, 5 percent more than in the corresponding period of 1978. Increases were 7 percent for traffic offenses, 7 percent for rowdyism, 14 percent for offenses against life and limb, and 115 percent for other offenses, especially those related to drugs. Decreases were observed in breaches of public order (4 percent) and property crimes (2 percent), with sexual crimes remaining constant. The crime solution rate was almost the same as in the previous year. The Royal Marechaussee (Military Police) reported 4,155 offenses in the first half of 1979, compared to 3,909 for the same period of 1978; 74 percent involved military personnel. In the same period, the police filed reports or collected fines for 1,445,306 nonindictable offenses, 11 percent less than in the first half of 1978. The Royal Marechaussee filed reports of 16,624 nonindictable offenses and collected 2,323 fines (compared to 19,505 and 2,499 in the corresponding period of 1978).
