The importance of employee alertness, teamwork, and attentiveness to customers is emphasized in this videotape and slide presentation on shoplifting prevention and shoplifters' techniques.
Abstract
Particular shoplifting techniques include working in teams, surveying or 'casing' the store before shoplifting, carrying shoplifted merchandise out of the store by concealing the price tag, and shoplifting in unattended or messy store areas. Employee awareness of these techniques can aid in developing prevention strategies. In addition, employees are urged to let customers know they will be waited on as soon as possible and to pay particular attention to control of fitting rooms. Shoplifting is a serious problem that has driven some stores out of business, and employee teamwork is required for effective prevention.
