The magnitude of white-collar crime and the activities of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to reduce it are reported.
Abstract
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce reports that white-collar crime costs the nation at least 40-billion dollars a year. The FBI has embarked on a program to intensify its efforts against such crime by holding seminars at its academy to bring agent accountants up to date on new methods which white-collar criminals are using, and by holding companion seminars for U.S. district attorneys. The agency is also planning to offer training to local, State, and Federal agencies. The current week-long seminars include lectures on computer crime, training in computer programming, and discussions led by representatives of other Government agencies, of university schools of business, and of the accounting profession. The article includes interviews with victims of the Equity Funding collapse and quotations from program lecturers. No references are provided.
