Police crime statistics for North Rhine-Westphalia in 1979 are reported.
Abstract
Statistics indicate a total of 1,003,818 offenses in 1979, (up 4.78 percent from 1978), as well as 1,213 national security offenses and 1,673 drug offenses reported by customs authorities. Increases were observed in violent crime (up 3.11 percent from 1978), firearms use (up 2.5 percent), thefts (up 4.5 percent), and drug crimes (up 29.0 percent). The crime solution rate was 41.21 percent, as opposed to 40.86 percent in 1978; the solution rate for violent crimes remained the same (77.05 percent). A total of 319,879 offenders were apprehended in 1979, 3.1 percent more than in the previous year. Juveniles aged 18 to 20 made up only 11.5 percent of the population, but 31.2 percent of the offenders apprehended were juveniles, most commonly accused of theft or some kind of drug offense. The number of non-German offenders (50.5 percent of them foreign workers) rose by 15.9 percent. More specific information provided pertains to national security offenses, offenses investigated by the border patrol, drug offenses handled by customs, crime in the Rhine-Ruhr District and other areas, and characteristics of apprehended offenders. Also covered are violent crimes by governmental district and police distict, killing of police officers, use of firearms by police officers, trends for separate offenses, missing persons and unidentified bodies, telecommunications use, and crime in major cities throughout the Federal Republic, including West Berlin. Brief essays describe crime prevention through police counseling, Euro-Check fraud cases, and present trends in drug crimes. Maps, graphs, and extensive tables are supplied. --in German.
