Crime victim services, which have greatly developed during the last few years, need to be evaluated to determine the effectiveness of various forms. Both crisis and victim services handle behavioral emergencies, suicide, and such common psychological reactions as depression and anxiety. To determine the effectiveness of victim services, treatment dimensions should be specified and different treatment groups compared. Treatment procedures can then be systematically varied without withholding services which using control groups would entail. In addition, the treatment goals should be limited to providing immediate safety and short-term emotional support, followed by a referral to other treatment agencies for long-term services.
