This data is used by Ohio courts in annual reports and budgeting, Federal publications on juvenile courts, private insurance companies, and student researchers, In collecting the information, every effort has been made to include all juvenile and adult cases, including those processed by probate, domestic relations, or common pleas courts in the less populous counties. Definitions are given for the six categories of juvenile court cases: delinquency cases, dependence and neglect cases, special service cases, juvenile traffic offenses, unruly cases such as truants and runaways, and cases in which offenses committed by adults are detrimental to the well-being of juveniles. Tables and charts are used to highlight relationships between types of offenses, age groups, and geographic areas. For example, almost 50 percent of juvenile dispositions were traffic offenses, youths between 15 and 16 were the group most frequently involved in unruly cases, and delinquency was concentrated in areas of high population density. Additional tables present State and county data for each category of juvenile court cases with detailed breakdowns which show source of referral, reason for referral, age, sex, race, type of care pending disposition, and previous court experience. A glossary of legal terms used in the report is appended.
