Ways in which the Airport Security Council and law enforcement agencies collaborated to prevent crime are reported.
Abstract
Law enforcement efforts to compile statistics on crime and to use these for helping in future investigations and for preventing future crimes are documented, together with law enforcement agencies' analyses of airline security problems. Guidelines the police drew up for airlines to follow are presented, broken down into categories of employee, nonemployee, and equipment matters. The airlines' response to the law enforcement guidelines is noted, and the study that resulted from the implementation of the guidelines is outlined. Diagrams illustrate examples of thefts and crimes that are particularly costly to airlines. The airlines have developed mandates, which are presented here as they relate to reducing opportunities for crime. Further discussion shows how specific efforts brought on decreases in the crime rates in the airline industry, and expands on the techniques for preventive crime programs that could be generalized to other industries.
