This report contains statistical and other pertinent data related to narcotics and dangerous drug violations throughout Alaska for the period November 1975 through December 1976.
Abstract
Increased narcotic and drug abuse problems began coming to the attention of law enforcement officials in 1968. The problem grew to such a magnitude that narcotic and dangerous drug enforcement units were established within the Criminal Investigation Bureau in 1973. The strongest emphasis was placed on detecting violations around major metropolitan areas since most offenses were committed there. Undercover operations were periodically conducted throughout the State in order to attack the problem in a unified manner. Tables provide information on numbers of violations; arrests by sex, age, and charge; total narcotic and drug seizures; and U.S. District Court and Alaska State Court felony case dispositions. Comparison data for December 1973 to November 1975 are provided. In summary, State Trooper arrest numbers decreased during the report year to 965 (due to the liberalization of the State's marihuana laws); of these, 523 were misdemeanor arrests; 54 percent of those arrested were under 21 years of age; the State Troopers accounted for about 8.3 percent of the total number of misdemeanor arrests in the State and about 71.5 percent of the total number of felony arrests.
