The year began with a constitutional convention which largely rewrote the judicial article of the State constitution. Changes included modifications of procedures for selection and discipline of judges, creation of a new intermediate court of appeals, and mandating of the district courts' existence. The legislature passed enabling legislation as well as several new criminal and related laws. A recorded total of 963 new cases were filed with the State Supreme Court during the year. Terminations totaled 876; written opinions, 207. A total of 835,951 cases were filed in the state's trial courts. Since 1973-74, the number of cases filed has grown at an average annual rate of 7.6 percent. Detailed statistics and narrative reports describe the work of each of the State's five circuit courts. Narrative descriptions cover the work of appointed boards and commissions, and such support services as the computer systems office and the Supreme Court law library are included. A statistical section presents tables on cases and terminations in each court.
