This is a report on the activities of the Governor's Task Force on School Violence and Vandalism in Michigan, appointed in 1979 to study the problem of school violence and vandalism and develop recommendations on how to reduce and prevent it.
Abstract
The task force is comprised of 40 Michigan citizens representing a broad cross-section of the State's population such as students, teachers, school board members, police officials, parents, and representatives of social and community organizations and State government. Five subcommittees address the concerns of students, educational personnel, law enforcement and school security, family, and social and community organizations. The recommendations are based on the conviction that the problem of violence and vandalism requires the involvement of the total community. The recommendations include greater student participation, the development of districtwide codes of conduct, disciplinary alternatives, and vocational and alternative education programs; improved classroom management through better feedback systems for teachers; the development of directives and suggestions telling how State and private agencies can reduce violence and vandalism; development of an annual school crime survey; and the expansion of family counseling programs.
