This report describes the activities of the Consumer Protection Division of the Kansas Attorney General's Office during calendar year 1977.
Abstract
More than 5,000 citizens used the division's services during the year, an increase of 35.7 percent over the previous year. This increase reflects successful educational efforts regarding consumer protection rather than an increase in consumer fraud. Over four-fifths of the complaints were closed or settled during the year. Complaints concerned mail order fraud, real estate developments, merchandise sales, and other matters. Over $906,000 were returned to Kansas consumers as a result of the division's activities. In two-fifths of the cases, the merchandise was repaired, replaced, or delivered. In addition, the division initiated new public information and education programs during the year. These involved the distribution of booklets and a film and the issuance of 75 consumer alerts. The division's staff consists of five assistant attorneys general, two special agents, two law clerks, and two undergraduate interns. Summaries of lawsuits filed by the division and one table summarizing the handling of cases are included.
