The crimes discussed include rape, murder, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft. During 1979, 38,375 of these crimes were reported, an increase of about 9 percent over 1978. A total of 2,613 violent and 35,762 nonviolent crimes were reported, violent crimes increasing 26 percent over 1978. A total of 76 percent of violent crimes were aggravated assaults, and 66 percent of nonviolent crimes were larcenies. Stolen goods amounted to about $17 million, and about 45 percent of this value was recovered. Murders totaled 49, a 4 percent increase over 1978; murders tended to be committed by males age 22 to 27. A total of 47 of the victims and 93 percent of the arrested suspects were white. Rape reports increased 10 percent in 1979 over 1978, totaled 186, and had a clearance rate of 62 percent. Rapists, like murderers, tended to be white and in their twenties. Reported robberies totaled 392, a 12 percent increase over 1978, and had a clearance rate of 39 percent. a total of 92 percent of all persons arrested for robbery were male and 34 percent were under age 18. Idaho averaged 2 law enforcement officers per 1,000 persons (in 1979), numbers of personnel are provided for county sheriff's departments, police departments, and the State police.
