As part of a project designed to open new lines of communication between police and community, this film documents the public's view of police as authorities, symbols, and human beings.
Abstract
The film includes professional authorities, such as Attorney Martin Murphy, legal advisor to the Portland (Maine) police; Judge Jessie Briggs of the Maine District Court; and Dr. David Keen of the emergency room at a Portland hospital. Citizens are also shown giving their views on criminal justice and police work in relation to their own experiences of victimization. Points made by the film encompass restrictive rules for police evidence and searches, a lack of respect for police on the part of the public, and public responsibility for legislation that police must enforce. The film also points out that most police work is difficult, stressful, and time-consuming.
