From late 1971 to March 31, 1980, the Workers Compensation Board, designated to act as the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, has received 1,234 claims. Of these, 674 qualified for benefits and 198 were withdrawn or still in process. The balance of the claims, 417, did not meet the requirements of the legislation and were not accepted. The most frequent causes of nonacceptance were lack of evidence of a scheduled crime, a benefit entitlement lower than the minimum $150.00, and the failure to report or cooperate with the law enforcement officers. The main crimes involved in the accepted cases were common assault (45 percent), robbery (13 percent), murder (9 percent), attempted murder (7 percent), dangerous use of firearms (6 percent), and bodily harm with intent (5 percent). As of March 31, 1980, 49 pensions are being paid; 24 in respect to permanent disabilities and 25 in respect to dependents in fatal cases. During this time, disbursements including temporary and permanent disability benefits, rehabilitation assistance, dependents' benefits in fatal cases, allowable expenses and administration, have totaled $2,635,136. Details of the claims and a statement of benefits paid and costs for the period April 1, 1979, to March 31, 1980, are attached with comparable figures for the preceding year.
