Typologies of community residential programs are identified are discussed to provide an understanding of the values and limits of the various forms of such services.
Abstract
The 'degree of freedom' typology of community residential services classifies programs according to the restrictions placed upon a client's movements, particularly in relation to activities within the community. Thus, community residential programs are classified in a range from foster family care to an institutional setting where clients only interact with staff and other clients. The 'services rendered' typology views community residential services according to the types of services provided. According to this typology, treatment activities are classified as (1) control (supervision, including compelling the client to do certain things as a condition of continued residence) and (2) assistance (aiding clients in obtaining help which will meet their expressed needs. Finally, the 'stage of intervention' typology views community residential programs according to the stages at which residential services may be rendered. These stages include alternatives to secure detention, preadjudication diversion, probation referral, early release for inmates from closed institutions, early release of inmates from nonsecure community facilities, initial parole referral, and later parole referral. Eleven references and charts are provided.
