A beginning section describes three types of learning: cognitive or knowledge learning, psychomotor or skill learning, and affective or attitude learning. The four major learning principles of motivation, practice, reinforcement, and learning transfer are described as well as their application to training. Another section covers techniques for specifying goals, such as writing a goal statement to express a trainee outcome, and techniques for developing more specific performance objectives that include behavior, conditions, and standards. The design of the overall training program is described in a section dealing with steps in the developmental process: identifying topic areas, sequencing material, selecting instructional data.
