In this collection of papers, Australian, American, and Japanese criminologists explore different aspects of crime prevention planning within the broader social, economic and political planning contexts at various government levels.
Abstract
Western democracies emphasize community participation as an essential component of all effective crime control and prevention programs, yet they do not have such strong, cohesive communities as Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In addition to the problem of building such communties, Western countries must control and prevent criminal behavior while preserving individual liberty and human rights. Various essays deal with crime prevention planning in the context of the Australian criminal justice system, while others explore crime prevention planning methods and techniques in the United States, the related issues of economic problems and environmental design; and Japanese planning at the national government level. Crime prevention is further discussed in terms of urban planning; the Australian police; and education of Australian aborigines and other crime-prone population segments for less crime. Concluding essays presented an approach to regional and local case studies, and a detailed account of the criminal justice services in such countries as Bangladesh, Botswana, Costa Rica, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, and the Philippines, with references to Gambia, Korea, Sri Lanka, Syria, and Uganda. An index is appended.
