Activities and achievements are highlighted in seven components: community organizing for grassroots development, recreation development, counseling and streetwork services to youth-at-risk, community education and training in crime prevention, crime victim assistance program for the elderly, the safe haven program, and neighborhood self-help. Major activities include (1) the creation of target block associations that focus on crime prevention, city wervices, sanitation, beautification, recreation, and assistance to the elderly; (2) the initiation of crime prevention clinics and open houses; and (3) the development of the 1980 minigrant program to fund target blocks and block associations for block-based, self-help crime prevention projects. In addition, a survey was taken to determine attitudes about crime and neighborhood safety. Finally, over 5,000 documents in crime and crime prevention were acquired and placed in the Act One Crime Prevention Resource Center at Marymount Manhattan College, and crime prevention programs and fat sheets reached approximately 46,000 elderly in the community. Fact sheets, a list of Safe Haven merchants, survey instruments, and summary sheets for each component are included.
