Tabular statistical data reflecting judicial workload profiles for the United States courts of appeals and for the district courts during fscal year 1979 through 1980 are presented; previous comparable data are included.
Abstract
Information regarding the courts of appeal is presented first, in chronological order according to circuit. National profile information is then included. United States district courts statistics are also arranged by circuit and then alphabetically according to State within each circuit. For the courts of appeals, the statistical format includes the overall workload statistics of filings, terminations, pending cases, percent change in total filings, number of judgeships, and number of vacant judgeships. Actions per panel are divided according to appeals filed and appeals terminated; type of filing or termination is indicated, e.g., criminal filing. The format for district court information is similar. Also provided is such information as median times from filing to disposition for criminal and civil cases, the percentage of jurors not serving on any actual trials, and the number of civil cases which are over 3-years old. District court workload figures are divided by the number of authorized judgeship positions in each court to provide the workload per judgeship. Cases in the courts of appeals are generally handled by panels of three judges. Consequently, workload figures in the courts of appeals are shown per panel. This breakdown virtually eliminates the influence of court size and allows comparison between courts of different sizes. Maps indicating jurisdictions are included in the statistical report, which is composed of extensive tabular data.
