Components for a model program for the recruitment and retention of students in criminal justice (CJ) education programs are presented to stimulate planning activity.
Abstract
Twenty-four possible strategies are presented. For each strategy the objectives, a rationale, implementation methods, intervention activities, and impact are presented. The first 12 strategies focus on recruitment and include using educational organizations' recruitment clearinghouse mechanisms, assessing high school juror and senior career interests, and conducting campus seminars for undeclared major students and on-site visits for prospective CJ majors. Other strategies include developing and disseminating information brochures, providing adequate financial aid to CJ majors, and conducting recruitment training workshops for CJ faculty. Retention strategies include maintaining a rewarding social and psychological environment for CJ students; providing high quality student educational experiences and academic advisement; and instituting mechanisms whereby CJ students are involved in curricula development, instruction, and evaluation. Additional strategies to retain students include establishing a system whereby CJ students participate in cooperative educational activities, establishing a process for dual majors, and conducting routine exit interviews for CJ students wishing to withdraw from the institution.
