This booklet is one of a series of publications which are intended to help secondary or adult students learn about citizen rights and legal coping skills; this work addresses the rights of persons who are arrested.
Abstract
Practical applications concerning the constitutional rights of protection against unlawful searches and seizures, of remaining silent, of receiving legal counsel, and of being offered reasonable bail are discussed. The materials can be used in secondary classes and in naturalization and high school equivalency programs. The booklets are written at two reading levels, one at a fourth or fifth grade level and the other at seventh or eighth grade comprehension. The content, activities, and paging of both are the same. Reading and weiting skills are emphasized through the inclusion of short reading selections and questions for written answers. In addition, classroom discussions are encouraged. Among the supplementary materials provided are a glossary and a sample search warrant, a citizen complaint form, and arrest report, an advice-of-rights form, and an application for representation by the public defender. Illustrations are also provided. (Author abstract modified)
