This manual for trainers of social workers provides a series of training units showing the processing of a child neglect case from referral through the court hearing.
Abstract
The sequential units can be adapted to the knowledge and an experience of the learner. Included are a variety of conceptual and experiential learning tools, suggestions for modifications, notes from field testing, and a sample teaching/training format. Several articles form the basis for lectures lasting 20 minutes or less. Individual chapters of the manual focus on the impact of law on child welfare practice, the decision to initiate court action, and the juvenile court process. Specific topics covered include definitions of child neglect/abuse and modes of treatment intervention, State intervention on behalf of 'neglected' children, supervising the new social worker in the court intervention process, the role of attorneys, and the experience for parents of the adjudicated neglected child in court. The social worker's perspective is emphasized. Each section includes lesson plans, lectures, outlines, and articles, as well as exercises. References are given in individual articles. Footnotes, tables, drawings, and a glossary are provided. For the videocassette and book of readings which are also parts of this training materials package, see NCJ 75768 and 75770.
