This handbook offers trainee volunteer probation officers practical suggestions in dealing with offenders (aged 12 to 21 years) on probation in Singapore.
Abstract
Probation is a method of treatment of selected offenders in the community under the supervision and personal care of the probation officer. The handbook emphasizes the role of volunteer probation officers as that of a friend, counselor, and helpmate to offenders on probation. For example, when an authoritative approach is neccessary, supervisors should be informed. Volunteers should not do anything that may associate them with authority and hamper their relationship with offenders on probation. The handbook suggests specific areas of assistance. For example, volunteers may help generate interest and motivate the offenders to participate in vocational training or find them suitable jobs. They can also develop the interest of offenders in sporting, cultural, and social activities by associating them with youth clubs, community centers, and sports associations. The handbook explains the activities of volunteers in the framework of the probation system. The trainee volunteer probation officer works on a one-to-one basis with the offender on probation together with the offender on probation together with the probation officer (supervisor) in a team approach. The supervisor diagnoses the case and plans a comprehensive plan of treatment. Basic counseling concepts, case histories, and background of the probation system are discussed.
