The report is intended to provide reliable data to help define the extent of the State's crime problem and develop programs to combat crime. Sections focus on background information on the crime reporting program, crime factors, law enforcement employee data, population factors, geography and environment, and the various crimes committed. In 1979, a total of 61,536 index crimes were reported. Of these, 18 percent were cleared through arrest, recovery of property, or extraordinary means. There were 8,519 Part I offenses per 100,000 residents. Of the $48,979,553 worth of property stolen, 25 percent was recovered. Robbery accounted for a property loss of $2,576,142. Residential burglaries made up 74 percent of all burglaries reported, and 42 percent of these were committed at night. Motor vehicle thefts totaled 4,916 and amounted to a loss of $14,074,904. Firearms were used in 64 percent of the murder-homicide cases reported; and of the 2,456 aggravated assaults, 26 percent were committed by the use of hands, fists, or feet. A total of 285 arson incidents caused $2,406,355 in damages. Finally, 324 assaults on officers were committed, and three officers were killed in the line of duty.
