The edited proceedings of discussions at the Victimology Research Agenda Development Workshop held in McLean, Va., in March of 1980 are presented.
Abstract
The objective of the workshop was to assist the Office of Research Programs of the National Institute of Justice in the development of an expanded research program in victimology. Potential workshop topics were selected on the basis of a literature review. Researchers selected to give papers had established an ongoing record of quality research in empirical victimology. These papers formed the point of departure for the workshop discussions. Each separate workshop discussion consisted of remarks by the invited guest speaker and a specific discussant, followed by a general discussion. Topics for the discussions included victim characteristics and lifestyle, assessment of behavior and methods of reducing risks of victimization, victim-offender relationships, and the psychological impact of crime on the victim. Other areas of discussion were victim-offender dynamics in violent crime, the causes and consequences of fear of crime, and multiple victimization. Finally, conversations pertained to methodological problems in victim surveys and their implications for research in victimology, data sources for victimology, and basic concepts in victimological theory. The final session was devoted to a discussion of recommendations. The texts of the workshop papers presented and a review of issues raised in the papers are contained in NCJ-76275 and NCJ-76285, respectively.
