Participants' presentations at the Eighth National Conference on Juvenile Justice (1981) are collected on audiotape cassettes.
Abstract
Discussions included those focusing on the Juvenile Justice Amendments of 1980 and future trends in juvenile justice, the Delinquency Prevention Through Youth Services Program and the effectiveness of the juvenile court in delinquency prevention, a program for helping learning disabled delinquents and another for reducing crime in schools, and recent National Advisory Committee standards for intervention and adjudication. Other talks address research into the effectiveness of the juvenile justice system, the Los Angeles County (CALIFORNIA) INTERCEPT PROGRAM for court diversions, standards for the secure detention of children, and recent developments in the area of juvenile law. Further presentations are concerned with the use of contracts in juvenile probation, plea bargaining in juvenile court, a study of institutional commitment and release practices in the 50 States, and the activities of San Francisco's Youth Law Center TOWARD the deinstitutionalization of status offenders and the removal of children from adult jails. Additional topics considered are the FAILURE-TO-THRIVE syndrome and psychosocial dwarfism, mentally retarded juvenile offenders, trial techniques in juvenile court, and juvenile arbitration programs.
