Highlights of the activities of the Department of Correction and Rehabilitation of Montgomery County, Md., during fiscal year 1979 are presented in this brief report.
Abstract
Considerable progress in the county correctional system was made during the year. Major achievements included continued recognition of the department as a national correctional model, designation of the department by the National Institute of Corrections as one of six area resource centers in the United States, and retention of the prerelease center as a LEAA national exemplary project for the second year. In addition, the county's medical programs for inmates were reaccredited by the American Medical Association, the alternative community services program received the 1979 National Association of Counties Achievement Award, and affirmative action goals were achieved by the department. Also during the year, $695,000 was approved for the construction of an indoor gymnasium at the detention center. The personnel board approved a career development plan designed to enhance the opportunities for upward and lateral mobility and to make the correctional field more attractive as a career. The college intern program, which serves to supplement the correctional staff, continued at a reduced level due to budgetary constraints. The prerelease center met its yearly goal through service to over 420 persons. The center provides residents with assistance in employment, counseling, and community activities which are aimed at effecting positive changes in the individual. Tables are included.
