The board's purpose is to supervise those adult offenders who have been placed on probation by the courts and those offenders released on parole. The seven-member board consists of individuals who are appointed by the governor to serve for 6-year periods. For this report period, a total of 1,172 paroles were granted by the board; 45.5 percent of those paroled were white, and 54.3 percent were black. Of the 1,172 paroled, 5.8 percent were women. A total of 48 parole revocations to place during this period. Offense categories most frequently represented by parolees included larceny, robbery, and homicide. Defendants processed by the courts and placed on probation totaled 9,609. Probation terminations included 6,348 by expiration, 752 by revocation, 145 by death, 12 by expungement; and 2,120 by court order. Of the 9,609 probations ordered, 920 were for women. There were 190 applications considered for pardon, of which 173 were granted. South Carolina actively participates in the Interstate Compact for the Supervision of Parolees and Probationers. This year, South Carolina supervised 1,095 probationers and parolees for other States. The role of the probation and parole agent is currently changing from that of a caseworker/counselor to that of a community resource manager. The State employed 132 agents during fiscal year 1979.
