The data were collected as part of the State's Uniform Crime Reporting Program. Sections focus on State-level, population group-level, and geography-level information, while a special set of tables provides detailed background data. In summary, 207,089 crime Index offenses were recorded, a 14-percent increase over the 1978 figure. Violent crimes accounted for 4 percent of the total, and property crimes made up the remainder. The number of violent crimes per 100,000 population was 166.1, while that for property crimes was 4,221.4. The number of murders increased by 36 percent (to 160 offenses) since 1978, but 88 percent of the cases were cleared -- the highest solution rate of any Index crime. Rates per 100,000 population for the following offenses are noted: murder, 3; forcible rape, 16; robbery, 61; aggravated assault, 86; burglary, 949; theft, 3,005; and motor vehicle theft, 267. The statewide clearance rate for all Index offenses was 20 percent; 212,296 arrests were accomplished. On July 1, 1979, a total of 12,245 law enforcement officers were employed (10,271 officers and 1,974 civilians).
