Some of the modalities exercised in the police public service approach to crime prevention are speaking engagements and films, the distribution of informational literature, media campaigns, radio spots, TV commercials, coliseum exhibits, citizen awareness and neighborhood security programs, civilian radio motor patrols, and rape and self-defense workshops. Commands extensively involved with the public through lecturing or assisting in the organization of citizen crime prevention projects are the crime resistance unit, the youth projects unit, and the sex crime unit. In addition, the department's public information office, whose members do not go out into the field, provide resource materials to officers involved in the community and supplies information and operational crime prevention services to schools, newspapers, radio, and electronic media. Since the department initiated specialized enforcement, complemented by media campaigns and the expansion of grass-roots neighborhood crime prevention, total burglaries have decreased 1 percent from the 1978 rate of 12 percent.
