Since July 1980, the national average of the 50 States for the highest State court has gone from $49,690 to $51,083; for the intermediate appellate courts from $49,354 to $50,876; and for the general trial courts from $43,128 to $44,151. The top 10 States in salaries for the highest appellate courts include California, New York, Alaska, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Louisiana, Michigan, Florida, Texas, and New Jersey. In California, an associate jusitce of the highest appellate court is paid $77,409 annually. Alaska offers the highest salary ($66,900) for general trial court judges. States which pay the lowest salaries include Maine, Vermont, and Utah. In Maine, an associate justice of the highest appellate court is paid $36,637 annually. Also included in the survey are data indicating the rank order of judicial salaries, income, and population. Future salaries and pending legislation are indicated for various States.
