This annual report of the Chief Constable of the Northumbria Police Department in England details the activities and accomplishments of the department during 1980.
Abstract
Major changes, achievements, and activities are noted in the areas of administration and personnel, training, crime, traffic and road safety, operations, community involvement, and sport and leisure. The new communications and computerization project is described. Crime figures are given, noting a much higher than average rate of violence against persons. Such figures are tied to the unemployment rates in Northumbria, and it is noted that 49 percent of detected crimes were committed by unemployed people. Efforts to increase police contact with the public are described, including increasing the number of foot patrols, continuing the volunteer cadet program for youth begun in 1978, and instituting victim support schemes. Fifteen tables of crime and police statistics are appended. Graphs and charts appear to illustrate the text.
