There were 152 murders, 611 rapes, 1,498 robberies, and 5,042 aggravated assaults recorded during the year. In addition, 17,935 burglaries, 40,263 larcenies, and 4,162 motor vehicle thefts were reported. The serious crime rate per 1,000 was 55.9, up from the 51.5 rate for 1978. Firearms were used in 61.1 percent of the 152 murders; 130 of the reported murders were cleared by arrest. With regard to rape cases reported, 36.9 percent were cleared by arrest. Robberies showed an increase of 9.9 percent over the 1978 incidence. The monetary value of stolen motor vehicles was approximately $12.1 million. Of the 4,162 vehicles stolen, 2,510 were recovered by law enforcement officers. In addition, police recovered $11.3 million of the 34.5 million in property stolen in 1979. There were 701 officers assaulted and 3 killed during the year. The number of officers assaulted increased by 4.7 percent over 1978; the largest number of assaulted officers were responding to family disturbance calls. Statewide agency cooperation characterized the Uniform Crime Reporting Program for 1979. Extensive tables are included. (Author abstract modified)
